Paul Scholes believes one Man United man has been ‘unlucky’ not to start more for the Red Devils

Paul Scholes believes that one Manchester United man has been ‘unlucky’ not to start more games under Erik ten Hag this season.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United picked up a 1-0 win over Luton Town which has kept the club’s hopes of Champions League football alive following a poor start to the season.

It was Victor Lindelof’s rifled finish into the roof of the net that won United the game but the forwards continue to score goals for the Red Devils.

After what has been a poor start to the season, the Red Devils sit just three points outside of the Champions League spots.

Speaking to Premier League Productions after United’s win over one of the favourites to be relegated, Paul Scholes singled out Victor Lindelof as being unlucky.

“I think he’s probably been a little bit unlucky not to be playing more,” Scholes said. “Bit of a scramble but the type of game you expect a scrappy goal.

“Once they got that goal they really dropped off and let Luton [Town] come onto them. You’re expecting that second and third goal but it never happened.”

The Swedish international has been in and out of the side with Jonny Evans impressing at centre-back which has meant the former Benfica defender has been on the bench recently.

The Swedish international did look a lot more assured at the heart of the United defence against the physically robust Luton side.

Whether he deserves his chance to start over Raphael Varane consistently is another question entirely but it seems Ten Hag trusts Lindelof over the former Real Madrid defender.

Varane’s inability to play as a left-sided defender has meant that he has been dropped from the side for a while now and looks to be a bench option.

The Frenchman’s relationship with Ten Hag is strained according to The Telegraph so there may be other reasons why Varane is out of the team.
