News Report: Rangers star “on the edge” as Philippe Clement gives Ibrox update……

Rangers star Ben Davies is “on the edge” of a return as Ibrox manager Philippe Clement rules four players out of the League Cup semi-final against Hearts due to injury.

The Belgian coach was providing an update on his team ahead of the Hampden clash with much being made about the ex-Monaco boss’ frustration with the physical conditioning of the squad.

There have been soundbites aplenty pointing to dissatisfaction with the fitness of the squad Philippe Clement inherited from Michael Beale, with Ben Davies one of several players routinely walking an injury tight-rope.

After missing the impressive 4-0 victory over Dundee, Philippe Clement has suggested it’ll be touch and go as to whether Ben Davies will be fit to play Hearts.

The Rangers boss also heaped the praise on Leon Balogun, who stepped into the centre-back role with aplomb at Dens Park.

Ben Davies) had a small problem (against Dundee) and that’s why I didn’t take chances with him,” Clement told the press ahead of the clash with Hearts.

“Also, according to what the medical staff told me, that it was a risk to let him play, I am not someone who takes risks in that way.

“I have confidence in the squad. I want to build a squad that’s more 11 or 14 players so you need to give chances and Leon Balogun took the chance.

Normally (Ben Davies) will be back (against Hearts) but it’s still on the edge.”

Philippe Clement: Ben Davies could join quartet on injury list

As well as discussing the injury situation with Ben Davies, Rangers manager Philippe Clement was talking about the other issues in the squad.

As things stand, there are four players in the Rangers team who are guaranteed to miss out as Philippe Clement looks to get his team back to full strength.

“I’m not thinking so much who was out but I can say who’s not in,” said Clement. “That’s easier for me for the moment.

“John Souttar will not be available for selection, Nicolas Raskin also not, Rabbi Matondo also not and Kemar Roofe also not.

“And the rest – I hope – if everything goes well that they are available to be in the selection.”

Rangers are preparing to face Hearts at Hampden for a place in the League Cup Final with the victor set to face off against Aberdeen.

The Dons defeated Hibs 1-0 at Hampden to book their place on the showpiece Final, which is set to take place on Sunday 17th December.
