West Ham United could be set to lose one player in particular on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.
David Moyes has a lot of work to do in the transfer market at West Ham over the next year or so, if he is to build a squad truly capable of challenging for the top six.
The Hammers boss needs to sign four or five players to complete what he currently has at his disposal, but he needs to get rid of the deadwood as well, with five players currently seeking exits from the London Stadium.
The problem for Moyes is that money is fairly tight due to FFP constraints, and he will have to sell before he can buy.
Getting some of the big earners off the wage-bill will be crucial for the Scot as well. However, losing one of our big money signings on a free transfer would be far from ideal.
West Ham signed Fornals, 27, from La Liga side Villarreal in the summer of 2019 for around £25 million (The Telegraph).
The Spaniard instantly endeared himself as a fan favourite in the East End with his passionate performances and clear love for the club.
However, he has regressed badly over the past year or so, falling well down the midfield and left wing pecking orders under Moyes.
Fornals is the Hammers’ fifth longest serving current player behind Aaron Cresswell, Angelo Ogbonna, Michail Antonio and Lukasz Fabianski.
It will be really sad to see him go but the truth of the matter is that he just hasn’t been good enough over the last year, and he certainly hasn’t been given enough action by Moyes.
The Spaniard has made just 10 Premier League starts since October 1st 2022 (Transfermarkt), and it’s clear to see that he is totally devoid of confidence now, every time he takes to the pitch as a late substitute.
I wish things could have worked out differently for Pablo at West Ham, but it seems like him leaving on a free transfer will be the best thing for the Spaniard in the summer of 2024.
