Raheem Morris wanted to fill out his staff in Atlanta as quickly as possible after the Atlanta Falcons hired him earlier this week, and so far he’s done a pretty good job in that area. After securing Marquis Williams as his special teams coordinator in 2024 after Williams agreed to stay, Morris made his biggest hire Saturday night when he hired Rams running backs coordinator and running backs coach Zach Robinson as his new offensive coordinator.
Robinson replaces Dave Ragon, who has yet to officially play but could end up elsewhere as a coordinator or with Arthur Smith at his next stop. The Buccaneers have requested an interview with Robinson, and the Bears, Saints and Patriots have already interviewed him virtually.
If the Falcons didn’t draft him, the Saints, Raiders and Steelers were hoping to take him privately. Instead, Morris could have brought a big-name coach to the Falcons to become his new offensive coordinator. That’s a huge plus considering Robinson helped build a great passing game in Los Angeles last year and kept it on the offensive end. 2022 despite injuries.Robinson, a former NFL player who spent his entire coaching career with the Rams on Sean McVay’s staff, came aboard as an assistant coach in 2019, reprising that role in 2021, and served as an assistant receivers coach for a year in 2020. .
He’s not the most experienced candidate as he hasn’t held an offensive coordinator role yet, but his quarterbacks coaching job and strong work in the Rams’ offense last year are invaluable as the Falcons look to add to the position. Bring in a new franchise quarterback this offseason and rebuild a long-underwhelming offense in 2023.I expect Robinson to consider taking Jake Peetz from the Rams. The passing game specialist has worked closely with Robinson the past two years and has years of experience coaching quarterbacks in the NFL, so that’s the role.
. He could have easily returned to Atlanta. Regardless of how he expands his staff, Robinson’s important role in Los Angeles, his working relationship with Morris and the fact that he’s a strong contender for offensive coordinator around the league has me excited about what he can do for the Falcons. . This is a strong first hire (or second if they keep Williams) for Morris. With any luck, Robinson will take the Falcons’ offense to the highest level it’s expected to reach in 2023, while Morris will work to get more wins and improve the rest of the roster.
With the Senior Bowl quickly approaching and the Falcons expected to work toward an important 2024 season, several hires are expected to be announced in the near term.
