Following the bittersweet news on Wednesday that Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has been called up to the Scotland squad, Daniel Farke may have an issue with Liam Cooper at his club.
On Wednesday, October 4, Cooper was included to Steve Clarke’s 25-man squad for Scotland’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying games against Spain in Seville and France in Lille.
After missing the September doubleheader with Cyprus and England owing to an injury layoff at the time, Cooper is now back in the international fold.
Since then, Farke has done well to acclimate the 32-year-old, starting him in consecutive Championship games against Watford and Southampton.
The German is no doubt eager to manage Cooper’s minutes in the hope of avoiding any further injury setbacks.
With the centre-back set to be away for the next 10 days or so after this weekend, however, he will be relying on the Scotland staff to do that for him.
“I have to say, I’m really happy with this Liam,” Farke said this week [4 October, Leeds Live]. “But that doesn’t mean that he plays each and every second from now and starts each game.”
In a perfect scenario, Cooper would represent his nation in one of their two games—both of which are prestigious events in and of themselves—and then return to Leeds in top shape to be ready against Bristol City on October 7. The fact that so many other players are on international trips with their national teams, though, may cause Farke some sleepless nights as he waits for encouraging news. In other Leeds United news, before playing QPR, Farke could wish to reevaluate his position on one of his players.
