The New York Giants need to improve their offensive line this offseason after the unit was once again among the worst in the NFL in 2023.
The offensive line has been a weakness for years and it’s past time to make a significant financial investment to strengthen alignment. Hitting free agency this offseason, Miami Dolphins RG Robert Hunt is a top target for New York’s front office. In the final year of his contract, Hunt is proving to be one of the best interior offensive players in the NFL this season. He will be a highly sought-after free agent in March and should be at the top of Big Blue’s wish list. Hunt is in the fourth season of his NFL career after being drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Over the past four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Hunt has become one of the best offensive guards in the NFL. Hunt, who is 1.90 meters tall and weighs 150 kilograms, is 27 years old. He began his professional career as an offensive tackle before moving to full-time guard in 2021. This move to center defense resulted in a monumental leap forward in Hunt’s development and production levels. This season, Hunt has only given up a total of five pressures and one sack in ten games (495 snaps) and has been a key contributor to the Dolphins’ elite rushing attack. His presence in the Giants’ lineup would immediately and significantly improve their passing and rushing attacks. A few weeks ago, the Dolphins extended right tackle Austin Jackson to a new three-year, $36 million contract. The decision to extend Jackson and not Hunt was strange (although extending Hunt will remain a top priority for Miami).As Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus pointed out, the decision to initially extend Jackson “could also be a signal that Hunt knows he can get a solid contract on the open market with a large sample of good players.”PFF projects a four-year, $70 million guaranteed contract ($17.5 million per year) and a total of $42 million for Hunt this offseason. This deal would make Hunt the third highest paid right guard in the NFL (About The Cap).A deal approaching the price of $18 million per year seems high, but the Giants may need to improve their offensive line. Hunt would transform the unit and provide veteran experience and exceptional skills to strengthen the interior of the line.
