This offseason, the New York Yankees are going to need to make a big move, and it might happen soon. New York is in a unique position. Although the 2023 season was undoubtedly disappointing, the team managed to win 82 games. Despite having one of baseball’s worst offenses, New York was able to qualify for the playoffs until the end of the season. This offseason, the Yankees must upgrade their offense and add a starting pitcher at the very least.
It sounds like the Yankees are extremely busy trying to make a major move and reportedly are “doing everything possible” to land Orix Buffaloes star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, according to USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale.
“They have to do something or heads will roll, starting with (Brian Cashman),” Nightengale said. “They have no choice but to make a splash. This is why they’re in on Soto. This is why they’re doing everything possible to sign 25-year-old Japanese free-agent sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto. And they want free-agent center fielder Cody Bellinger. “The Yankees plan to act like the Yankees of old, a sequel to the winter of 2008 when they dropped $424.5 million on CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett, and won the 2009 World Series.”
Though they will undoubtedly face fierce competition, Yamamoto is without a doubt the Yankees’ first pick in the starting rotation, thus a move may be imminent. It is thought that Yamamoto will land in New York, and additional information should be available soon.
