Sam Greenwood is flying on loan at Middlesbrough. The Leeds United star has been excellent in the last few weeks with Michael Carrick’s side – and it is a further sign the club has made a glaring error.
Greenwood scored again on Saturday during a 3-3 draw with Plymouth. Not only that, but the Leeds ace won a penalty for Boro. This comes from playing on the left flank under Carrick, a new position for him.

The versatile attacker now has three goals in his last five Championship outings. He is showing all the promise that he teased at Elland Road, in glimpses. Greenwood is a player with enormous potential.
He just needed to go on loan and get some game time, which he is certainly getting at Boro. However, Leeds have made a big mistake and that is to include a permanent clause in his loan at The Riverside.
The Athletic claim that Middlesbrough and Leeds agreed to include a £1.5m permanent clause in his contract. A bargain fee anyway, for a player that has had a hand in five Premier League goals for us.
But even more so, because of his form over the last few weeks. Greenwood is starting to turn potential into proven Championship form. Especially, with Leeds actually lacking a no.10 – his natural position.
There are two issues here. Firstly, Leeds have not given themselves a chance to potentially keep the talented ace at Elland Road beyond his loan in the north. Secondly, the price of the permanent clause.
A bargain, at £1.5m. Greenwood is showing the kind of form that is expected from a player worth a whole lot more. So, either should not have included the clause – or a much more expensive one.
