Gary O’Neil has been dismissed as Wolves manager, with a leading candidate already emerging as his potential replacement.
The Englishman exits Molineux with Wolves sitting 19th in the Premier League following a 2-1 home loss to Ipswich on Saturday.
While reports suggested the club’s board supported O’Neil after Monday’s 2-1 defeat against West Ham, another setback in front of home fans seems to have prompted them to act. According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Wolves have decided to part ways with O’Neil, with an official announcement expected soon. He becomes the third Premier League manager to be sacked this season, following Erik ten Hag’s departure from Manchester United and Steve Cooper’s exit from Leicester City.
The next managerial appointment will be critical for Wolves’ owners, who face mounting pressure from fans after allowing key players to leave without adequate replacements.
Currently, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the frontrunner to replace O’Neil, according to the latest betting odds. The former Manchester United manager, who has been out of work since his dismissal in 2024, was seen at Molineux recently, though the exact reason for his visit remains unclear.
Solskjaer leads the pack ahead of Steve Cooper and former Porto coach Sérgio Conceição. Another potential candidate is West Brom’s Carlos Corberán, considered one of the top tactical minds outside the Premier League, with odds of 10/1. David Moyes, who left West Ham at the end of last season, is also in contention with odds of 12/1.
