On Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox announced the signing of veteran pitcher Martín Pérez to a one-year, $5 million contract. Despite being somewhat overlooked this offseason, Pérez has delivered consistent performances over the past few years.
Pérez’s 2024 season was a rollercoaster. After a rocky start with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was traded to the San Diego Padres, where he turned things around and posted an impressive 3.46 ERA by season’s end. Though Pérez has become something of a journeyman in recent years, he remains most closely associated with his time with the Texas Rangers.
During his second stint in Arlington, Pérez played a crucial role in stabilizing the Rangers’ depleted rotation. His strong performances were instrumental in helping the team secure its first-ever World Series title in 2023. However, his tenure with the Rangers ended shortly after, as the team’s tight budget prevented them from re-signing him.
Ahead of the 2024 season, Pérez joined the Pirates, where he initially struggled, posting a 2-5 record with a 5.20 ERA in the first half of the season. However, following a midseason trade to the Padres, he regained form, finishing his time in San Diego with a 3-1 record and solid numbers in the second half.
As Pérez prepares for the 2025 season with the White Sox, he aims to bring veteran leadership to a rotation that has ranked among the league’s weakest in recent years.
