If you love Christmas and the Knicks, almost every year you will receive a special gift.
That’s because the Knicks have played on Christmas Day a record 56 times since their founding in 1946. That includes the NBA’s very first Christmas game, on Dec. 25, 1947, when they defeated the Providence Steamrollers 89-75. Speaking of the Steamrollers, they appeared in a game on Christmas Day, but the Charlotte Hornets did not. The Hornets remain the only modern team to have never played on Christmas. However, what have they actually done to warrant an appearance? Either way, the Knicks are not only the NBA’s leaders in Christmas Day games, they can lead any team in any sport in that category.Fittingly, a Knicks alumnus holds the record for most points in a Christmas game – and that would be none other than Bernard King, who scored 60 points against the New Jersey Nets. King remains one of the most underrated players of all time, and it remains an absolute travesty of basketball that he was left off the NBA’s Top 75 list in favor of players like Dennis Rodman and Damian Lillard. So that’s disgusting, it’s nonsense. But still Merry Christmas, Knicks fans. And sorry, Hornets fans, but you’ll be getting the coal again this year.
