Joseph Paintsil was a genuine target for Leeds United last summer and The 49ers even made a bid for the Genk speed machine – but he stayed, and has since starred for the Belgian outfit this term.
Paintsil, 25, was the subject of intense interest from English clubs in the summer. The Athletic said that despite a swap deal with Southampton that involved Paul Onuachu, Paintsil wanted to move to Leeds.
What Has Happened To Qatar’s World Cup Stadiums?
Leeds tabled an £8.75m bid. It didn’t get anywhere. Phil Hay then reported that a move for the Ghana star came to a halt because talks over bonuses between Paintsil and Genk stalled the deal, for Leeds.
The winger has since been excellent for Genk. The winger has had a hand nine goals this season, during his 21 appearances for the Belgian side. He has scored five, laid on four assists. Contract ends in 2026.
So, should leeds revisit a move? It is unclear if the issues that previously scuppered a move have been sorted and would allow for a possible transfer. Leeds also have a plethora of options out wide, currently.
But, Willy Gnonto continues to be linked with a summer move to the likes of Lazio. Cree Summerville is garnering interest, Jaidon Anthony is only on loan and Ian Poveda may be tempted to leave in January.
So, the need for a winger is not there currently but could easily grow over the next few weeks. Paintsil was keen on joining us in the summer and that desire may still remain inside the Ghana speed machine.
One to watch to see if that interest does rear its head once again. But as for now, Leeds are stocked out wide. Paintsil would be a wonderful addition, but only if he comes in as a replacement for another
