CONTROVERSY: Texas A&M football 5-star drops strong message to team over De-commitment

Texas A&M football fans weren’t exactly shocked to see Shemar Stewart’s name rising on NFL draft boards following his early declaration. Stewart has possessed an NFL-ready frame since high school, and that has only fueled the excitement among scouts.

He fits the mold of a prototypical strongside defensive end at the next level. While his career stats don’t feature an overwhelming number of sacks or tackles for loss, his game film makes it clear how unique his physical attributes are.

This week at the Senior Bowl, where NFL scouts are watching closely, Stewart’s skill set has been on full display. He’s been a standout performer in Mobile, generating so much buzz that he and his agent apparently feel he has already proven his value.

According to Matt Miller, Stewart—along with Trey Amos and Mike Green—has decided to sit out the remainder of Senior Bowl practices after solidifying his draft stock.

As Miller notes, Stewart has already demonstrated what he needed to. His dominant one-on-one performances throughout the week have only solidified his status as a potential early first-round pick.

This trajectory is exactly what many expected from Stewart, one of Texas A&M’s most highly-rated recruits ever. Though his college stats may not jump off the page, his weekly impact was undeniable, making him a crucial piece of A&M’s defensive front for the past three years.

Stewart’s ability to engage and shed blocks—something he showcased masterfully in Mobile—has made a lasting impression on scouts. With his draft stock soaring, he is well on his way to becoming one of the first names called on draft night and could be the first Aggie selected in the first round since Kenyon Green three years ago.
