The San Diego Padres and veteran catcher MartÃn Maldonado have reportedly agreed to a contract, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Lin noted that the deal is a minor-league agreement.
Maldonado, 38, has been in the MLB since 2011, spending time with the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago White Sox. He is best known for his stints in Houston and Milwaukee, where he spent parts of six seasons with each team.
While Maldonado has never been a significant offensive contributor, he won a Gold Glove with the Angels in 2017. He is widely respected for his defensive skills and his ability to guide pitchers to success.
In 2024, Maldonado played for the White Sox, appearing in 48 games and posting a .119/.174/.230 slash line. With the Padres, he has a chance to compete for the backup catcher role, though it is not guaranteed.
