The Houston Astros remain in contention to re-sign Alex Bregman, a key player for the team, after trading reliever Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs. This move provides the Astros with increased financial flexibility, which is critical for reopening negotiations with the two-time All-Star. While earlier reports indicated that Bregman was likely to leave in free agency after talks had stalled, a recent update suggests the team is now making a strong push to retain him.
According to Bob Nightengale, an MLB insider for USA Today, the Pressly trade has removed a major obstacle. On X, formerly known as Twitter, Nightengale stated:
“The Ryan Pressly trade now opens the door wide for Alex Bregman’s return to the Houston Astros. The Astros needed to move Pressly before the Bregman acquisition could become realistic.”
