A former Boston Bruins defenseman is set to compete in the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off.
Urho Vaakanainen was named to Finland’s roster on Sunday, replacing the injured Miro Heiskanen of the Dallas Stars. The New York Rangers defenseman joins Buffalo Sabres’ Henri Jokiharju as an injury replacement, filling in for Toronto Maple Leafs’ Jani Hakanpaa.
This season, Vaakanainen has recorded six assists in 26 games while playing for both the Anaheim Ducks and Rangers. Originally drafted by the Bruins in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, he made his NHL debut in the 2018-19 season and spent four seasons in Boston, tallying six assists in 31 games. He was part of the trade that sent Rangers captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim earlier this season.
The NHL 4 Nations Face-Off kicks off on Feb. 12, with Team Canada facing Team Sweden, followed by Team USA taking on Team Finland on Feb. 13.
