The New England Patriots activated Christian Barmore to their 53-man roster on Saturday, clearing the way for him to potentially make his season debut on Sunday in his fourth NFL year.
Barmore had been sidelined since the start of training camp, placed on the non-football injury list after being hospitalized for blood clots in July. He participated in his first practice of the season on Thursday but was absent from Friday’s session.
If cleared to play, Barmore could take the field for the first time in 2024 when the Patriots face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at noon CST at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Patriots coach Jerod Mayo emphasized that Barmore’s return would be guided by medical experts. “Yesterday was a good day,” Mayo said on Friday. “Seeing Barmore back out there was great. The expectation is there is no expectation. When he’s ready to go, he’ll play.”
To accommodate Barmore on the active roster, the Patriots released wide receiver Tyquan Thornton. A second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Thornton recorded four catches for 47 yards across six games this season.
