Leeds United paid around £17.4 million to bring the 27-year-old in from Hoffenheim, and he has largely justified that fee with his performances at Elland Road.

Daniel Farke has leaned heavily on Anton Stach this season, making him a regular in the starting XI. The midfielder has delivered seven goal contributions in the Premier League, underlining his influence in a side battling to stay competitive.
Those displays might have been expected to push him back into the Germany setup. However, national team manager Julian Nagelsmann appears unconvinced. The former Bayern Munich boss has questioned Stach’s effectiveness in the air and suggested he is not an elite ball-winner.
Nagelsmann even hinted that Stach’s strongest role may be as the central defender in a back three, capable of stepping into midfield, rather than as a traditional midfield presence. Speaking via Florian Plettenberg on X, he explained that while Stach is performing well, he lacks dominance aerially and does his best work when the play unfolds in front of him.
That stance suggests the Leeds midfielder is not currently central to Germany’s plans.
For Stach, the timing is far from ideal. He has become a key figure for Leeds during a critical phase of their Premier League campaign, and outside criticism could prove an unnecessary distraction.
Supporters in West Yorkshire are unlikely to appreciate Nagelsmann’s remarks, particularly given the potential impact such comments can have on a player’s confidence.
While a place in Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad may feel distant for Stach, Farke could yet see international recognition handed to another of his in-form players.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been outstanding for Leeds, scoring 10 league goals in 25 appearances. The England striker looks revitalised at Elland Road, and his form may give Thomas Tuchel something to think about when selecting his next Three Lions squad.
From Farke’s perspective, international call-ups are a sign of progress, and Calvert-Lewin has certainly strengthened his case this season.
