Despite his strong performance in Washington, Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore could be a surprising cut candidate following the NFL playoffs. The $97 million defender, acquired midseason to bolster the Commanders’ secondary, has lived up to expectations on the field. However, reports suggest Washington may part ways with him as they continue building for the future.
Drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Lattimore has established himself as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks, amassing 15 interceptions, five fumble recoveries, two touchdowns, and 409 total tackles. Traded by the New Orleans Saints—who are in the midst of a rebuild—Lattimore found new life with the Commanders, contributing significantly to their playoff push.
While Washington’s progress under new ownership, led by Josh Harris, is evident with a trip to the NFC Championship Game, the franchise remains focused on long-term sustainability. This could involve drafting a younger cornerback and moving on from Lattimore, a four-time Pro Bowler, to reshape the roster for the future.
After releasing Emmanuel Forbes, the Commanders are likely to prioritize a more durable addition to their pass defense. Though Benjamin St-Juste appears to be a cornerstone of the unit, he would benefit from a veteran presence with greater longevity. While Lattimore isn’t currently injured, the unpredictability of injuries makes his situation precarious, leading to speculation about his future in Washington.
