TRANSFER DEAL: Italian media drop claims that Newcastle United have set asking price for Sandro Tonali

Sandro Tonali is reportedly homesick—at least if you trust certain foreign media outlets over his actual agent. According to these reports, the Italian midfielder is eager to return to Serie A, with AC Milan and Juventus said to be ready to welcome him back. How considerate of them.

The £55 million signing from AC Milan had a unique opportunity to spend time in Italy when he was handed a 10-month ban for gambling, during which his gambling addiction came to light. However, instead of returning home for an extended period, Tonali chose to stay in England, only traveling back to Italy for counseling sessions related to his addiction.

It’s worth noting that Newcastle likely would have allowed him additional leave to address his challenges in Italy, given how early the ban occurred in his time at the club. Yet, Tonali remained in England, showing up to training regularly and demonstrating his commitment. Since returning from the ban, he has steadily improved and become an important part of Newcastle’s squad.

Meanwhile, the Italian press seems determined to either unsettle the player or fuel the hopes of Serie A fans eager for his return. For instance, Il Corriere dello Sport has claimed that Juventus is prepared to sell two players to finance a bid for Tonali. Ironically, one of those players is Nicolo Fagioli—the same player who reportedly exposed Tonali’s gambling activities to the Italian Football Federation. The second player mentioned is Kenan Yildiz.

Even more baffling is the claim that Newcastle would accept a €55 million (£45.4 million) transfer fee for Tonali, roughly £10 million less than they originally paid for him. Such a suggestion feels implausible. After investing in Tonali during his most challenging period—paying his wages during the ban and supporting him through counseling—why would Newcastle sell him at a loss? It simply doesn’t add up.

While there may be some truth to the speculation about homesickness or Serie A interest, Newcastle fans have little reason to doubt Tonali’s happiness at the club. His agent recently stated as much, and the player’s actions—his commitment to training and steady performances—speak volumes. For now, Newcastle seems intent on keeping their talented midfielder, regardless of what the Italian press might claim.
