Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, and Fabian Schar have each received four yellow cards in the Premier League this season. If any of them are booked during today’s match against Leicester City, they will be suspended for Newcastle United’s next league game. Earlier this season, Dan Burn served a one-match suspension after accumulating five yellow cards, missing Newcastle’s defeat to West Ham following his booking against Nottingham Forest 15 days earlier.
Currently, Tonali, Joelinton, and Schar are at risk of suspension. A yellow card today would rule them out of next weekend’s Premier League clash with Ipswich Town, but they would remain eligible to play against Brentford on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup. This is because yellow card suspensions in the Premier League do not extend to other competitions. In contrast, Sean Longstaff will miss the Brentford match due to yellow cards accumulated in Carabao Cup fixtures, as competition-specific suspensions apply in such cases.
Only red card suspensions carry over between the Premier League and the Carabao Cup. Newcastle experienced this rule firsthand in February 2023 when Nick Pope’s red card against Liverpool in a league match ruled him out of the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.
Addressing the risk of suspension for Schar and Joelinton last month, manager Eddie Howe remarked, “The likelihood is they’ll be booked before the cut-off point, but that’s why we have the squad.”
On the Leicester City side, Boubakary Soumare will miss today’s match due to a one-game ban after receiving his fifth booking of the season against Brighton. Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy, Jordan Ayew, and Wilfred Ndidi are each one yellow card away from suspension, though Ndidi is not expected to feature at St. James’ Park due to injury.
