There are rumors that the New York Yankees will significantly strengthen their roster before spring training.
Juan Soto leads the Bronx Bombers’ group of new additions, but there is speculation that the Yankees are done. SNY’s Andy Martino hinted at the idea that Brian Cashman and the organization aren’t yet comfortable with adding a pitcher, saying he wouldn’t be surprised if a deal is signed during spring training.Jim Bowden of The Athletic writes that he believes the Yankees are the team to sign Blake Snell, though there are conflicting reports. Bob Klapisch reports that Hal Steinbrenner has moved on from left-handed pitching and talk of adding pitching has moved to the trade market.Blake Snell remains a free agent and spring practice is just days away.
He doesn’t appear to be having a bad year, as he finished last season with the highest ERA in baseball (2.25) and won the National League Cy Young Award. A short-term deal seems counterintuitive given the likelihood that he will perform worse next season. But the market hasn’t made the cut for him yet, and that probably won’t change anytime soon. The Yankees have been one of the teams linked to Blake Snell, but with him crossing the $300 million mark, a sudden move to increase his salary even more seems less likely by the day.
Scott Boras is looking for the money he’s asking for, and he won’t take no for an answer. This has been his calling card for many years and is generally a good thing for a player. The team may be more stubborn than ever, and this offseason will end in exciting and dramatic fashion.Scott Boras has four more high-profile free agents on the market: Cody Bellinger, Jordan Montgomery, Matt Chapman and the aforementioned Blake Snell. ) are all eligible to participate. This is pending as the top teams in the market have signed the players they want and are now focusing on next season with their current rosters. Whether the Yankees are ready to make the move remains to be seen, but there’s good reason to believe they’ll enter the season with what they have. Could Blake Snell make an appearance for them? Of course, they won’t bid on Carlos Rodon’s contract this winter beyond his $162 million value, especially given the rotation issues.
If the Yankees were to add a pitcher, I think it would be in the trade market to add one that isn’t too expensive for the luxury tax and still maintain financial flexibility before the trade deadline.Keep it simple; Blake Snell may not be coming to the Bronx, but there’s no clear picture of where he’ll go and his market seems to be disappearing.
