Could a major trade still be on the horizon for the New York Yankees? New York has been linked to seemingly every big-name pitcher who could be available this offseason. The Yankees signed Marcus Stroman but also have been linked to top free agents Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell The club also was linked to former Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes before he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles.
New York also has been mentioned as a fit on numerous occasions for Chicago White Sox star Dylan Cease.
Cease seemed like a guarantee to be moved this offseason but things have changed. Chicago may end up keeping him to start the 2024 campaign. While this is the case, the Yankees still are “open” to a possible deal, but won’t trade elite prospect Spencer Jones, according to USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale. “The New York Yankees are still open to acquiring Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease, but they refuse to part with prized outfield prospect Spencer Jones,” Nightengale said. “The Yankees also rebuffed the Milwaukee Brewers’ request for Jones before the Brewers sent Corbin Burnes to Baltimore.” Cease would be a massive pickup for the Yankees. He’s just 28 years old and is under team control through the end of the 2025 season. New York already has depleted its farm system somewhat but still has some intriguing pieces left.
The White Sox are going to trade Cease at some point. It would make sense to do a deal before the 2024 campaign kicks off just in case injuries pop up. Maybe the Yankees still could get something done.
