The Yankees continued to build their minor league depth at a high level, bringing a popular and speedy outfielder to the Bronx. Now in his third game with the team, Greg Allen has had good success in his short time with the Yankees, hitting .250/.387/.450 and posting a 130 OPS in 37 games.
This was first reported by Robert Murray, and Allen should provide some speed and protection in case any outfielder on the roster gets injured. Speed is Greg Allen’s calling card.
That’s because his athleticism and switch skills have always caught the attention of various teams. This is a minor league deal, meaning the Yankees don’t have to make room for a base-stealing slugger on the 40-man roster.Greg Allen spent last season with three different organizations where he found success in Triple-A, starting with the Boston Red Sox.
He then joined the Yankees in a trade that brought him in to replace the struggling Aaron Hicks, providing speed and defense to the team. Allen’s injury allowed the Yankees to remove him from the injured list in August, but with the influx of young prospects, he was assigned to an assignment.

The Milwaukee Brewers then signed Greg Allen to a minor league contract, but released him in mid-September because he underperformed at the plate in a limited sample in Triple-A. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014 and changed the league when he was traded to the San Diego Padres in the 2020 season shortened by COVID-19. He would join the Yankees in 2021, when he was traded for James Passos, and would be promoted to the major league team after pacing Scranton with a 152 wRC and 26 stolen bases in 73 games. As the Yankees battled with COVID-19 and injuries, Greg Allen would have been loved by fans with an incredible 142 WRCs and a hit, but he lost his cool and ended up joining the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022.
Allen hasn’t had much success in MLB outside of the Yankees, where he had a 130 OPS and 0.8 fWAR in 37 games. Whether it’s the appeal of the streak or just consistency, his best performances have always come while playing in the Bronx, and maybe he can work that magic again when the Yankees need him.
