Tributes have been paid to a former Newcastle United player whose pioneering activism earned him recognition as more than just a footballer.
George Eastham, a member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team, passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by his family.
Born in Blackpool, Eastham spent the majority of his career at Newcastle. Although he didn’t play in England’s 1966 World Cup triumph, he was part of Sir Alf Ramsey’s squad that won the tournament, the only time England has lifted the prestigious trophy.
Newcastle United expressed its sorrow upon hearing the news of Eastham’s passing, offering condolences to his family and friends during this challenging time.
However, Eastham’s most lasting contribution to football was not on the pitch; he played a crucial role in reforming player contracts, which allowed players more freedom to move between clubs after their contracts expired.
Eastham joined Newcastle in 1956, but later sought a move during his career.
