The Miami Dolphins are one step closer to bringing one of the team’s best defenders back to the lineup for Sunday’s AFC decider against the Baltimore Ravens.
Jevon Holland, who was sidelined for a month with anterior cruciate ligament sprains in both knees suffered during Miami’s 34-13 win over the New York Jets, participated on a limited basis in all weekly practices in Miami, and it’s possible he could resume his starting role on Sunday’s road trip against the Baltimore Ravens. “I’m optimistic about Jevon. The biggest thing is he didn’t have any setbacks today,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said, referring to Friday’s practice, the last of the preseason week in Miami. “We’ll see how his body handles the situation. Because of his resolute nature, you really have to be careful not to have any setbacks. It’s all gas and no breaks.”Holland, the 2021 second-round pick, has practiced limitedly in recent weeks but has rarely done positional drills or worked in team periods until this week. And apparently the Dolphins coaches liked what they saw. “I’m going to mind my own business, day by day,” said Holland, who contributed 70 tackles, one interception and three fumbles in 10 games played. something like that. I’m just taking my time to make sure this wound actually heals. Brandon Jones replaced Holland after the injury and contributed 40 tackles, two interceptions and four pass deflections in his six games.Last week, the Dolphins regained strong safety DeShon Elliott as their starter. Elliott had missed the previous game due to a concussion suffered in Miami’s 28-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans, and if Holland returns, Elliott and Holland will likely be paired together. HUNT RETURN TO DOLPHINS O-LINE Terron Armstead, Austin Jackson, Lester Cotton and Robert Hunt, four starting offensive linemen who are all dealing with nagging injuries, participated in practices Friday. Armstead, the Dolphins’ starting left tackle who normally misses Wednesday’s practice because of knee, ankle and back soreness, has participated in the last two sessions and is expected to start. Jackson has been limited all week due to an oblique injury that he has had for a few weeks but has worsened in recent days. The injury forced the Dolphins to keep him out of the starting lineup for Miami’s win over the Cowboys last week. The Dolphins instead started Kendall Lamm at right tackle. At this point, it’s too early to say what that plan might look like.Cotton appeared on the injury report Thursday because he suffered a hip injury that appeared to be a recurring problem for him. Keep in mind that Liam Eichenberg, who has been starting since Connor Williams suffered his ACL injury in Miami’s loss to Tennessee, is playing with a calf injury that has limited his participation in practice for three weeks.
