Alisson has come to Liverpool’s defense after manager Arne Slot criticized the team’s performance against Girona, stating: “We’re not machines.”
Despite maintaining their perfect record in the Champions League and edging closer to the last 16, Slot expressed dissatisfaction with Liverpool’s intensity and pressing during the match, labeling their display as underwhelming. The Reds, who secured their 19th win in 22 games this season, were nonetheless scrutinized by their head coach.
Alisson, making his return from a nine-week hamstring injury and delivering key saves to preserve Liverpool’s clean sheet, emphasized that occasional off-days are a natural part of football. The Brazilian goalkeeper noted that the ability to win even when not at their best is the hallmark of a successful team. Liverpool currently leads both the Champions League and Premier League standings.
“Yes, it’s part of being a winning team,” said Alisson. “Throughout a season, you’ll see trophy-winning teams that don’t always deliver their best performances. Consistency is key, but you also have to accept that not every day will be perfect.”
He added: “We’re not machines, and off-days happen. The great thing about football is that you always have another chance in a few days. We just need to stay focused, be happy about earning the points, and recognize areas for improvement.”
Alisson highlighted the importance of building on past successes: “We don’t need to reinvent ourselves. We should take the good things from our performances against teams like Manchester City and Real Madrid and keep doing those consistently.”
Focusing on the positives, Alisson also noted the significance of key players returning from injury, including Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa, and himself, as well as the impending return of Alexis Mac Allister following his domestic suspension.
“Having players come back from injuries is a big boost,” Alisson told Liverpoolfc.com. “Diogo, Chiesa, myself – we’re all ready to make an impact. Macca will also be back soon, which will further strengthen the squad.”
