Despite the unlikely scenario of Leicester City either sending impressive loanee Facundo Buonanotte back to Brighton or paying a club-record fee for Evan Ferguson, rumors connecting the young striker to the Foxes continue.
This ongoing speculation raises an intriguing question about the potential impact on the team if Ferguson were to join in January. How would it affect Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s side?
Firstly, there’s the potential effect on both the starting lineup and squad. If City were to spend over £30m on Ferguson, it’s improbable that he would be relegated to the bench. However, leaving out an in-form Jamie Vardy at this stage would also be a bold decision.
Ferguson’s possible move could also impact the broader squad. While Van Nistelrooy appreciates Patson Daka, the arrival of Ferguson might push him further down the pecking order, possibly leading to a departure. Similarly, Odsonne Edouard, currently struggling to make the matchday squad, would likely be moved on.
The arrival of Ferguson would also influence City’s style of play. The 20-year-old brings a versatile game, with a particular strength in attacking crosses. Under Van Nistelrooy, City has crossed the ball less frequently than they did under Steve Cooper, but this trend could shift if Ferguson were signed.
However, it remains unlikely that this transfer will materialize. Van Nistelrooy will complete his squad assessment over the next two weeks, and based on his early observations, defensive reinforcements seem to be the priority for January.
In other news, Leicester City has been linked with Watford’s Georgian international attacking midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze. Both Everton and Wolves are also reported to be interested in the 25-year-old.
Having joined from Genk 18 months ago, Chakvetadze has provided four assists in the Championship this season, but his contributions go beyond just numbers. He ranks second in the division for key passes and has been the Championship’s best ball carrier, completing 92 carries into the final third—30 more than the second-best player, Borja Sainz.
While Leicester may not urgently need players of Chakvetadze’s profile due to the presence of Buonanotte and Bilal El Khannouss, he remains a player worth watching.
