JUST IN: Manchester United star slammed after Forest defeat and Martinez drops claims on Ruben Amorim

It was another turbulent weekend for Manchester United after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest was followed by the news Dan Ashworth had left the club. Ashworth started work as sporting director in July and his stint at Old Trafford has been ended after just five months.

The Manchester Evening News revealed shortly after Ashworth’s exit that he recommended a move for Gareth Southgate and that he was not in favour of appointing Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach. Martinez on Amorim Lisandro Martinez has praised the “intensity and energy” Ruben Amorim is trying to implement at United. Amorim hasn’t inspired the immediate turnaround in results that fans hoped for, but United’s new head coach has brought in a new style of play and needs time to improve the team.

Martinez was interviewed by the club’s media for the United matchday programme on Saturday evening, where he spoke about Amorim and the “intense” style of football he wants to implement.

“It’s the way I like to play, the kind of football: the passion, the energy,” Martinez explained. “If you share that with me, it’s easy to connect quickly. He has many, many great qualities.”

“I think he demands what the club expects, which is great. I like his passion, his energy, and the way he wants to play — strong in possession, solid defensively. I think he’s excellent. Also, the staff [Amorim’s new coaching team] and the overall energy around the team have been fantastic.”

Martinez also shared his thoughts on Amorim’s system: “It’s a three-at-the-back setup, but during the game, we have principles that adapt. Sometimes we play with four at the back, sometimes with five. It all depends on how they attack, how we attack, and our defensive shape.”
