A former Manchester United midfielder has shared the reasons why his time under Erik ten Hag ended poorly.
Ten Hag, who was dismissed by the club in October, won two trophies during his tenure, including the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Despite significant spending aimed at restoring the club to its former glory, questions were raised about his player recruitment and tactical approach. One player, who scored only two goals for the team, has explained why his time at Old Trafford ended badly.
Donny van de Beek’s stint at Manchester United was nothing short of disastrous. After a loan spell at Everton, he was sent on loan to German side Frankfurt last season, where he struggled to make an impact. Van de Beek revealed why his move to Frankfurt was set up to fail from the beginning.
“I came from far away, needed rhythm and a run of games, but that was simply not possible. The result was that I started driving myself crazy. I had to show what I could do in a match, but I ended up overdoing it and losing focus,” he said in an interview with Voetbal Primeur.
He also explained the personal struggles he faced during this time: “My home situation was far from ideal. Estelle was heavily pregnant, and we decided she would stay in England for the birth, along with our daughter. She was in Manchester, and I was alone in Frankfurt. With football not going well, I often found myself asking: What am I doing?”
