Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has reportedly attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur, with discussions already underway between the club and his representatives regarding a potential transfer next summer.
Now 24, Gomes has made a significant impact since leaving United in 2020. Following a loan stint in Portugal with Boavista, he established himself as a key player for Lille in Ligue 1, amassing 129 appearances over the past three years. He even earned his senior England debut in September.
With just over six months remaining on his contract at Lille, Gomes may be on the move again. According to TBR Football, Tottenham has initiated talks with his camp, and his Lille teammate Jonathan David is also reportedly on their radar as he approaches the end of his deal. Both players will be eligible to negotiate with non-French clubs in January, potentially allowing Spurs to secure their signatures for free in the summer as manager Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen the squad.
Gomes, who joined Manchester United’s academy at the age of six in 2006, became the club’s youngest debutant since Duncan Edwards when he appeared in a Premier League match against Crystal Palace in 2017. However, despite signing his first professional contract later that year, Gomes struggled for regular first-team opportunities and left United in 2020 after making just 10 senior appearances. He subsequently signed a five-year deal with Lille, spending his first season on loan at Boavista, where he scored six goals in 32 matches.
Reflecting on his departure from United in 2021, Gomes addressed misconceptions about his decision: “There was a contract on the table for me to sign. Everyone says I left for money, but that makes no sense. It was more about the pathway and the opportunities Lille offered. It was a big step, but one I felt was right.”
Gomes’ strong performances for England under Lee Carsley this autumn, coupled with his expiring contract, have fueled speculation about his next move. While Tottenham leads the chase, other Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, have reportedly shown interest. In September, Gomes hinted at a possible Old Trafford return, saying, “There will always be a sentimental soft spot, so of course, it’d be difficult to say no. But after finding happiness abroad, I know playing in the Premier League isn’t the be-all and end-all.”
