The next matchup between Hull FC and Wigan Warriors looks to be challenging.
John Cartwright has pushed his Hull FC team to refocus and maintain the same “effort and attitude” against Wigan Warriors the following week, as well as throughout the remainder of the season.
On Sunday week, the Black and Whites will play the Super League champions for the third time this year. They hope to move over the disappointment of their derby loss on Good Friday and, more crucially, avoid undoing the momentum from the season’s strong first quarter.
Hull showed a lot of heart and spirit in the clash but unfortunately lost 28-14 to Rovers, with Cade Cust’s 16th-minute red card giving them a huge mountain to climb.
But should they display the same characteristics as on show at the MKM Stadium, then Cartwright is backing his side to at least compete ahead of what is set to be another gruelling test.
Speaking to Hull Live post-match, Cartwright said: “There is nothing better as a coach than witnessing a team that never gives up. They’ve got a lot of courage, and they work hard for each other.
“We’ve seen that every week for the past eight games. Our team has the skill to defeat anyone in the competition if you keep showing up with that effort and attitude. The difficult part is that we have to keep doing it regardless of who takes the pitch. We’ll contend in every game if we do that.”
Cartwright praised Will Pryce, Hull’s “major signing,” who displayed flashes of his “danger” again in a valiant performance from the full-back position. This was only his third game for the team since joining from the NRL’s Newcastle Knights.
Cartwright praised his new hire, saying, “He was brilliant again.” “He simply never stops opposing the opposition. He was also quite strong defensively. He had to defend in the line after they repeatedly targeted him on the goal line. He moved to the front and saved a few tries as some huge males charged at him.
“He attacked from all over the pitch. The defence gives him a lot of attention since he is a handful and disappears if you look away.
“It’s a major signing for the club at his age and with the ability he has – he’s going to be a very, very good player for a long period of time.”
