Former Everton midfielder Li Tie has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in bribery during his football career. The 47-year-old, who played for Everton alongside Wayne Rooney and later managed teams, including the China national team, admitted to giving and receiving over £12.6 million in bribes between 2016 and 2021.
Li, who earned 92 caps for the Chinese national team and participated in the country’s sole World Cup appearance in 2002, also reportedly secured his managerial position with the national team through bribery. In a documentary aired in China, Li expressed regret, acknowledging that he should have adhered to ethical practices in football. His sentence was handed down following a thorough investigation by Chinese authorities.
