Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could be in line for a contract extension given his team’s stellar 10-3 playoff season.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote about the potential extension in a report Sunday morning. “When NFL.com asked him at the December league meeting in Dallas if he [Cowboys owner Jerry Jones] foresees a contract extension for McCarthy as a result of the team’s success. The indication was yes,” writes Rapoport.“He will have a course that will find its own time frame,” Jones told Rapoport, “I won’t do anything like that until the season is over.”McCarthy is currently under contract through the 2024 season. The veteran coach, who recently underwent an appendectomy, is expected to be on the sidelines Sunday when the Cowboys face the Buffalo Bills. The Cowboys are 30-20 in 50 games under McCarthy since 2020 with a 1-2 record in the playoffs, including an NFC East division title in 2021. The Cowboys are trying to clinch second place in the NFC playoff race, with the San Francisco The 49ers are already taking first place and earning the coveted week one playoff spot.“There’s nothing to juggle,” McCarthy said Friday of his team’s run to the playoffs. “You have no control over the other aspects of it. We have to beat Buffalo. When we get to 11 wins, we’ll look around and things will be a little clearer.McCarthy, 60, a native of Homestead, Pa., was head coach of the Green Bay Packers for 12 seasons, a tenure that included winning Super Bowl XLV.
