Alexander Isak is reportedly unhappy with the current state of play at Newcastle United amid uncertainty around his club future. Liverpoolapproached the Magpies about doing a British record £120million deal but the board are determined to back Eddie Howe by keeping hold of the Swedish striker.
Isak has been getting better and better since his £63m move from Real Sociedad in January 2023. He bagged 10 goals in his first half-season and has since surpassed the 20 mark in successive Premier League campaigns, finishing only behind Mohamed Salah in last term’s scoring charts. Practically every top side in Europe would love to have Isak but Liverpool are the only team to make a serious effort so far.
Their enquiries about the possibility of doing a mega-money deal were swiftly knocked back, with the Toon not willing to sell at any price. Anfield bosses have quickly moved on to Hugo Ekitike, having muscled in ahead of Newcastle in the battle for the Frenchman.
Although Isak is not expected to try and force his way out of the north-east, he is believed to be ‘upset‘ about his contract situation. The 25-year-old is tied down for three more years but a new and improved package would make it easier to prevent his head being turned.
According to The Sun, contract talks are at a standstill and there has been ‘no progress’ towards agreeing an extension. Last year, Isak’s camp were ‘promised’ that his £130,000-a-week salary would be bumped up.
And although the Magpies are willing to make Isak the highest-paid player in their history by putting him on more than £200,000 a week, there are still doubts about whether he will commit his long-term future to the club.
