Since taking charge at the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta has transformed Arsenal into one of England’s top teams once more.
Earlier this season, the Gunners faced challenges due to the absence of key players, especially in midfield. However, with the return of Martin Ødegaard and Mikel Merino, Arsenal has been performing at an exceptionally high level.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Everton, Arteta highlighted the significant impact Merino has had on the team, particularly in addressing issues on the left-hand side.
When asked by the club’s media team about Merino’s role in strengthening that area, Arteta acknowledged the improvements the summer signing has brought. He noted that Arsenal had struggled with instability on both flanks in recent years, largely due to player availability.
Arteta emphasized the importance of building consistency and chemistry among players, explaining that such connections are vital to the team’s performance.
Since Granit Xhaka’s departure in 2023, Arsenal had faced persistent challenges on the left side of their lineup, often leaning heavily on the right for attacking plays. Despite Merino’s positive contributions, injuries to left-back options like Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko have limited Arsenal’s full potential on that flank.
Myles Lewis-Skelly, another left-footer, impressed against Monaco, and his performance could earn him a chance against Everton. As the injury situation improves, Arsenal’s left-hand side is expected to become an even greater offensive threat.
