SACK NOW: Referee sacked by the PGMOL with immediate effect

Referee David Coote has been dismissed by the PGMOL following the circulation of an unverified video last month. The video allegedly shows Coote making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp. Coote retains the right to appeal his dismissal.

Last month, an unverified video surfaced on social media, allegedly showing Coote making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp. In response, the 42-year-old was initially suspended as the FA launched its own inquiry.

On Monday, the PGMOL confirmed Coote’s dismissal, stating that a thorough investigation determined he was “in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract,” rendering his position untenable.

The PGMOL released a full statement regarding David Coote’s dismissal, which read:

“Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect.

“Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.

“Supporting Coote continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to his welfare.

“Coote has a right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment.”

Last month, another video emerged allegedly showing David Coote snorting a white powder, reportedly during Euro 2024, where he served as an assistant VAR. UEFA, European football’s governing body, appointed an ethics investigator to examine the matter.

Separately, the FA is investigating an allegation—vehemently denied by Coote—that he discussed issuing a yellow card to a Leeds player with a fan in an online conversation before a match. The Sun reported that Coote allegedly booked the player and later messaged the fan, saying, “I hope you backed as discussed.” The FA has called this allegation “a matter of urgency” and is actively investigating it.

Coote has strongly denied the claim, stating:
“I strongly refute these false and defamatory allegations. Whatever issues I may have had in my personal life, they have never affected my decision-making on the field. I have always held the integrity of the game in the highest regard, refereeing matches impartially and to the best of my ability.”

The PGMOL’s investigation into Coote’s conduct did not include the Leeds yellow card allegation.
