Newcastle United defeated Chelsea and advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals after scoring twice in three minutes of the first half. This was the clubs’ second encounter in as many days, and the home team got some retribution for losing in the Premier League.
Eddie Howe selected a strong Newcastle team and was rewarded with a great performance, while visiting manager Enzo Maresca chose to use a lot of rotation. Prior to Axel Disasi awkwardly turning through his own net after his teammates slept off and allowing Isak to hang on to a swiftly taken free kick, Alexander Isak initially took advantage of a Chelsea possession error deep in their own half.
Newcastle’s quest for their first significant domestic trophy since 1955 is still ongoing, and Maresca’s choice to make just one substitution—Cole Palmer was among those left on the bench—may have served as an example of his other objectives. For the quarterfinals, the host goes into the hat.
