The New York Yankees dropped their series opener against the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Tuesday. Here’s how the Yankees performed in the loss:
1. The few hits given up by Clarke Schmidt proved costly.
The righty retired the side in order in the first before giving up a single and a double with one out in the second inning. The first Orioles run came home to score on a groundout from Heston Kjerstad. Schmidt started the fourth inning with a walk before recording two outs. A Ryan O’Hearn single brought the Orioles lead to 2-0 before the end of the inning. The pitcher then recorded the first out of the sixth before giving up a solo home run to Anthony Santander, marking the end of his night. Schmidt only allowed four hits, but his three runs given up were crucial in deciding the game.
2. The Bronx Bombers’ offense turned it into a one-run game.
The Yankees scored their first run of the game via an Aaron Judge homer in the bottom of the fourth. The team then entered the bottom of the seventh inning down 4-1. An Anthony Rizzo double and Alex Verdugo single put two runners on with two outs. Gleyber Torres then drove in a run with a ground-rule double. Juan Soto followed that up with a single to right field that brought the score to 4-3. Torres was thrown out trying to score the tying run, ending the inning. The Orioles would hold on to their lead for the rest of the game, as they would go on to win the series opener. 3. The Yankees will look to clinch the division again on Wednesday.
One Yankees win was all that was needed for the team to be AL East champions. The Orioles foiled the Bronx Bombers’ plans for that on Tuesday. The Orioles will send Zach Eflin to the mound in Game 2 as the team tries to keep their divisional hopes alive.
