The Miami Dolphins have more questions than answers following their 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon. Of course, many of these questions surround the quarterback position. As fans are well aware, the Dolphins’ starter, Tua Tagovailoa, is out indefinitely after suffering a brutal concussion in their Week Two loss to the Buffalo Bills.
In their first game without Tagovailoa, the Dolphins mustered just 205 yards of total offense. Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was just 13/19 for 107 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Former Packers and Aaron Rodgers backup Tim Boyle was 7/13 for 79 yards.
After Tagovailoa was diagnosed with a concussion and put on injured reserve, the Dolphins signed former Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley off of the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad.
Huntley does not provide much security, though, at the quarterback position. How he was named a Pro Bowl quarterback in 2022 still baffles many fans. That year, he started just four games, had more interceptions (three) than touchdowns (two), and had a passer rating 77.2.
Clearly, Miami is not going to win many games with Thompson, Boyle, and/or Huntley under center. With Tagovailoa’s timeline to return undetermined, many feel the team should look elsewhere for a different option at the quarterback position.
In a recent article posted on Bleacher Report, it is suggested that the Dolphins look into trading for Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was just reinstated by the NFL following his two-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs:
“The Dolphins have placed Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, so the soonest he can play is Week 8. That said, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Tagovailoa is seeing concussion specialists and that there is no timeline for his return. Given his extensive history of concussions, that could mean any number of things.
“In the meantime, the Dolphins are rolling with Skylar Thompson. It’s a risky strategy given his limited experience and the Dolphins’ opportunity to compete in the AFC East. Jimmy Garoppolo was just reinstated after serving a two-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. His experience running a Kyle Shanahan offense could be invaluable even if he just ends up being the backup.”
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel previously worked for San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Garoppolo, of course, was with the San Francisco 49ers for six seasons after he won two Super Bowls backing up Tom Brady with the New England Patriots.
Garoppolo probably would not cost more than a late day-three draft pick if the Rams were to agree to a trade. And while the former Las Vegas Raiders starter has not had consistent success on the field over the course of his career, he is probably a better option than anyone currently on Miami’s roster.
