The New York Knicks are about a quarter of the way through the season. While they’ve performed quite well, games like Tuesday’s 146-122 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks show they still have work to do if they want to be considered a top contender in the Eastern Conference.
New York (12-8) has reportedly been linked to some of the league’s top trade candidates, but they have held out as the season has progressed. One of the most realistic potential signings was Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns, but it seems like a trade between the two sides doesn’t make sense, at least not during the season.NBANBA NewsAt homeTeamsQuizClockNews bulletinKnicks position in Karl-Anthony Town trade situationJesse Johnson-USA TODAY

One of the most realistic potential additions was Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns, but it appears a trade between the two teams wouldn’t make sense, at least not during the season.
Towns’ Timberwolves currently hold the best record in the league at 16-4 and appear to be a buyer if they can maintain a top spot in the Western Conference, making the idea of selling their franchise almost futile.
However, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, it’s possible the two parties could get back together if neither reaches their goals by the end of the year. If Minnesota were to exit the playoffs early, the Knicks and Timberwolves could always return to a potential trade with luxury tax issues looming over Minnesota’s roster after significant salary increases begin next season for Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels and Towns , along with… Rudy ) Gobert’s salary,” Scotto wrote. “These four players make up a large sum of Minnesota’s projected $190 million roster.”“It’s worth noting that Knicks president Leon Rose represented Towns while he was at CAA,” Scotto continued. “Knicks senior vice president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas was his general manager in Minnesota.
Knicks assistant Rick Brunson
also coached Towns in Minnesota.”The Knicks have some players the Timberwolves might be interested in: After failing to land a long-term contract this offseason, Immanuel Quickley becomes a restricted free agent and a sign-and-trade could be part of the deal.
Minnesota is facing a similar situation, with point guard Mike Conley set to become a free agent, leaving them looking for backcourt help this offseason. New York could also consider trading RJ Barrett, which would give the Wolves a surefire small forward who could be under team control for three more seasons beyond this one.Regardless, Towns will come to Madison Square Garden on New Year’s Day when the Timberwolves play their annual game against the Knicks. Meanwhile, New York faces the Boston Celtics on Friday night at TD Garden (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG/NBA TV).
