Former New York Jets quarterback and one-time NFL Most Valuable Player Boomer Esiason believes New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll should not consider benching undrafted rookie signal-caller Tommy DeVito in favor of fellow backup Tyrod Taylor coming off the club’s bye
DeVito, a native of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, played this fall after both Jones and Taylor were sidelined with injuries. While Jones is out through the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, Taylor was designated to return from the injured reserve list on Monday. Taylor hasn’t played since he suffered a rib cage injury during the Week 8 loss to the Jets on Oct. 29.
DeVito has thus far completed 66-of-105 passes (62.9%) for 697 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s also contributed 83 rushing yards and a score on 21 carries.
It’s unclear if DeVito or Taylor will start when the 4-8 Giants host the 6-6 Green Bay Packers next Monday night. Esiason thinks Daboll has an easy choice.
As of Monday afternoon, the ESPN Football Power Index gave the Giants a 0.1% chance of making the playoffs. Logic suggests Big Blue should spend the next month learning what DeVito is and/or isn’t, but Daboll may think that Taylor is the better option as it pertains to beating Green Bay.
