Former Rangers striker Kenny Miller fears the Scottish Premiership giants still have a Ryan Kent shaped hole in their squad with a lack of genuine ‘wingers’ at Ibrox these days.
Abdallah Sima may have something to say about that, of course.
Often lining up on the left-sided role that Ryan Kent made his own on the blue side of Glasgow, the Brighton and Hove Albion loanee has been a big success north of the border, scoring more goals already (nine) than his predecessor managed in his final two Rangers seasons combined.
Sima, however, remains something of a rarity in this Rangers roster. This is, after all, a squad overloaded with number tens and attacking midfielders but light on fleet-footed widemen, Sima one of the few alongside Rabbi Matondo, Scott Wright and Ross McCausland
Where are the wingers at the club?,” Miller asks, speaking to Clyde Super Scoreboard. “Where are the guys at the club who are capable of being direct and dribbling and putting defenders on the back foot? They’ve let a Ryan Kent go. You have let that type of player go.
“I don’t really see any other real wingers in that Rangers team at this moment.”
Miller is confident, then, that there is ‘definitely a place’ for 20-year-old Ross McCausland to establish himself as one of Clement’s go-to attackers in Kent’s absence. The newly-capped Northern Ireland international has been one of the success stories of the current campaign. His scintillating performances only exacerbating the concerns surrounding his precarious contract situation.
There’s a contract on the table from Rangers,” Miller’s former Ibrox skipper Barry Ferguson tells Go Radio, translated via Belfast Live. “So I’d like to think where he’s been given a chance, he’ll put pen to paper. (I hope) he’ll commit to a new contract at Rangers.
“He’s been a breath of fresh air, to be honest with you, since he’s come into the team. He’s come off the bench and did really well, got his first start against Livingston. I thought he was really good.
“I’d like to see him stay put, as I said. I always like to see young players come through the system. That’s what he’s done and, hopefully, he’ll sign a new deal.”
Kent joined Fenerbahce on a free transfer a couple of months ago. That he is already being linked with a return to UK, however, speaks volumes about how things have gone for him in Turkey
