Las Vegas, NV — She wasn’t drafted. She wasn’t supposed to make it. And now, Becky Hammon is one of the most successful coaches in WNBA history.
In 2022, Hammon became the first rookie head coach to win a WNBA title, leading the Las Vegas Aces to their first-ever championship. But her rise didn’t start there. As a player, Hammon went undrafted in 1999 despite a standout college career. She carved out a legendary 16-year WNBA career and earned six All-Star nods.
After retiring, Hammon made history again by becoming the first full-time female assistant coach in NBA history, working under Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. In 2020, she became the first woman to act as head coach in an NBA game, when Popovich was ejected.
Now back in the W, she’s a two-time champion coach with a reputation for innovation and leadership. Her journey from overlooked to overachieving is not just inspiring—it’s rewriting what’s possible for women in sports.
