Real Betis head coach Manuel Pellegrini has played down speculation linking the Spanish club with former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
De Gea, who turned 33 last week, has been without a club since leaving Old Trafford in July. United made the decision not to renew his contract after a shaky conclusion to last season, with manager Erik ten Hag deciding to revamp the goalkeeping department instead.
The Spaniard, however, has found it difficult to source a new club, with nothing so far coming to fruition for the former Atletico Madrid youngster. He has been linked with a flurry of clubs across Europe and in Saudi Arabia.
The most recent club to have been linked with the possibility of handing him a route back into the sport was Betis, who were dumped out of the Europa League by United last season. It was suggested they were targeting De Gea as a free agent to provide cover for injured shot-stoppers Rui Silva and Claudio Bravo.
