The Boston Bruins have entered their 4 Nations Face-Off break after a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden. The visitors secured the game-winning goal on a power play with just 1:10 remaining, handing the Black and Gold their second consecutive loss despite leading heading into the third period.
With games on hold for the next two weeks, most Bruins players will take the opportunity to rest before returning to practice next week. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the team reassigned two prospects, Matthew Poitras and Michael Callahan, to the Providence Bruins in the AHL, allowing them to gain valuable playing time during the break.
The Bruins officially announced on Sunday that Poitras and Callahan had been sent to Providence. This move comes as no surprise, as neither player requires waivers for reassignment.
Poitras was previously sent down in November under former head coach Jim Montgomery, performing well during his AHL stint and continuing to contribute upon his return. The young forward has provided key assists, particularly setting up David Pastrnak’s goals at crucial moments. In 26 games with Boston, Poitras has recorded one goal and 10 assists.
Callahan, on the other hand, has been solid in his limited NHL appearances, playing in the first eight games of his career. The defenseman has made an impact by blocking nine shots and filling in effectively when needed.
Sending both players down allows them to stay sharp with consistent ice time. Depending on how the Bruins approach the remainder of the season—whether making a playoff push or evaluating future talent—both Poitras and Callahan could see extended opportunities in Boston. Poitras, in particular, will benefit from every shift he gets, as he aims to prove he’s ready for a full-time NHL role next season.
