BREAKING NEWS: Canadiens’ new Professional ice Hockey centre talks on Fueling trade just now

The Montreal Canadiens and Jake Evans remain at an impasse in contract extension talks, increasing the likelihood of a trade before the March 7 deadline. According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, negotiations have stalled over financial disagreements, prompting multiple teams to express interest in acquiring Evans as a rental for the rest of the season.

“As mentioned during our Habs TSN broadcast, my understanding is that Evans and the Canadiens have exchanged figures on a potential extension, but they remain far apart,” LeBrun said Sunday. “While things could shift with a single phone call, as of now, a trade before the deadline seems more probable. Interest in Evans has picked up, especially with Montreal’s recent struggles.”

LeBrun had previously reported on January 15 in The Athletic that discussions between Evans and the Canadiens were already looking uncertain, as the team appeared hesitant to commit to a long-term deal at his current asking price. “Montreal has made it clear they’d like to keep Evans, but it won’t be a blockbuster contract,” LeBrun wrote. “The term of the deal is likely to be the main sticking point. Both sides will make an effort, but there’s no certainty it gets done.”

The Canadiens have dropped eight of their last ten games leading into the 4 Nations break, significantly reducing their playoff hopes. They currently hold a 25-26-5 record with 55 points, trailing the Detroit Red Wings by six points for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Evans, 28, has registered 11 goals and 27 points in 55 games this season—just two points away from matching his career high—while maintaining a plus-2 rating through Sunday’s game. With unrestricted free agency approaching and a $1.7 million cap hit, he stands out as an appealing trade target should Montreal decide to move him.

Adding to the speculation, Evans’ remarks to Sportsnet’s Eric Engels before the 4 Nations Face-Off break carried the tone of a possible farewell. “It’s been an honor,” Evans said. “This is such a fun place to play, a great city to live in, and I’ve truly enjoyed my time here. It’s a privilege to wear this jersey, given the rich tradition and the legendary players who have represented it with pride.”
