The Mets are actively exploring ways to reshape their roster ahead of the 2025 season, with veteran outfielder Starling Marte emerging as a key figure in trade discussions. As reported by Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the team has engaged in talks with the Kansas City Royals about a potential deal involving Marte in exchange for right-handed reliever Hunter Harvey.
“Sources told Mets On SI that the Mets discussed trading Marte to the Royals for Harvey during the December Winter Meetings in Dallas,” Ragazzo noted.
Marte’s Declining Performance
At 36, Marte is coming off a challenging 2024 season, marred by injuries and inconsistent play. In 109 games, he posted a .269/.327/.388 slash line, with just seven home runs and 40 RBIs. His strikeout rate rose to 21.9%, and his power production dropped significantly, reflected by a .119 isolated power. Despite his offensive struggles, Marte still offers speed and defensive versatility, having stolen 16 bases and provided reliable outfield coverage.
However, with $19 million owed to Marte in the final year of his contract, the Mets appear ready to move on. His declining production and recent health issues have made him more of a liability, prompting New York to explore trades that would offload his salary while improving other areas of the roster.
Hunter Harvey: A Potential Bullpen Upgrade
The Mets’ interest in Hunter Harvey highlights their focus on bolstering their bullpen. Harvey, 30, had a mixed 2024 season between the Nationals and Royals, finishing with a 4.44 ERA over 60 innings and a 9.77 strikeouts-per-nine rate. His 97 mph fastball and sharp curveball make him a strong candidate for high-leverage situations, which could address the bullpen inconsistencies that plagued the Mets last season.
A Fit for Both Sides
For the Royals, Marte represents a potential offensive upgrade and veteran leadership for a team lacking outfield depth. If healthy, he could bring stability and a spark to Kansas City’s lineup. Meanwhile, the Mets would not only acquire a reliable bullpen arm in Harvey but also gain $19 million in financial flexibility. This extra room could allow them to pursue additional roster upgrades as they prepare for the new season.
While this particular trade scenario appears to be from the past, there remains the possibility of renewed talks or similar deals in the future. Both teams could benefit from finding common ground, with the Royals adding experience to their lineup and the Mets securing both a bullpen boost and budget relief.
