The New York Mets recently received disappointing news—they are reportedly out of the running for Roki Sasaki. Sasaki has apparently narrowed his options to three teams, none of which include the Mets. Consequently, the team will need to explore alternative options for bolstering the top of their rotation.
James Nolan of FanSided recently speculated that the Mets might pursue a blockbuster trade for Seattle Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo. Nolan proposed a one-for-one trade, where the Mets would send infielder Ronny Mauricio to Seattle in exchange for Castillo.
“New York has a wealth of intriguing prospects, and the Seattle Mariners are reportedly open to trading Luis Castillo,” Nolan explained. “Ronny Mauricio, an MLB-ready prospect, could be a strong return for Seattle. Castillo’s trade value isn’t as high as the Mariners anticipated, so acquiring a promising player like Mauricio would make sense. Although Castillo’s strikeout rate declined in 2024, he still delivered an impressive season.”
Castillo, a three-time All-Star, posted a 3.64 ERA across 30 starts last season and has maintained a 3.34 ERA since 2022. At 32 years old, he is known for his durability, having pitched fewer than 150 innings only twice during his eight-year career.
The trade could benefit both teams: the Mariners would shed a significant salary while acquiring a young, high-potential infielder, and the Mets would secure a proven ace to lead their rotation. Castillo would immediately take on the role of the rotation’s top pitcher, addressing concerns about the Mets’ starting lineup.
